Course Description

Course Overview
This online Control and Administration of Medicines course is designed to provide learners with an understanding of the correct procedures to follow when prescribing and administering medicines, in both a social and domiciliary care environment. Delegates will learn how to keep records of each administration, as well as all incoming and outgoing medicines, so as to ensure that the risk of error is minimised. Within this course, you’ll also find the “Knowledge Set for Medication” course modules covered as defined by Skills for Care and Development in 2005. Upon successful completion, learners are required to be observed to competently administer a range of medication.

1. Controlling Medicines
This comprehensive programme of study covers the knowledge a manager or senior care worker needs to enable them to supervise or undertake the administration of medicines in their particular care establishment, and in accordance with current legal and organisational requirements.

The programme will focus primarily on the:

  • Legislation relating to the control, handing and administration of medicines.
  • Difference between policies and procedures and their importance in relation to medication processes.
  • Roles, responsibilities and boundaries for practice of individuals in relation to the control, handling and administration of medicines.
  • Types of medicines prescribed and their related routes of administration.
  • Safe practices relating to the control, handling and administration of medicines.

In order to provide a rounded learning experience, we have added a few extra topics relating to the administration of medicines. These are not identified within the Skills for Care Knowledge Set and as such will not be formally assessed. They are optional components that are included for individuals who have an interest in the subjects and who may have clients with specific needs in relation to medication.

2. Managing Medicines
Before any medicine can be administered it must be prescribed, collected and logged into the care establishments' records and systems. This section will look at these processes and will explore the roles of the various members of the care team.

We will explore the:

  • Prescribing, dispensing, obtaining and checking of medicines and the roles that various members of the care team play as well as the role of the care worker in a variety of care settings.
  • Importance of seeking guidance and support where queries arise in relation to medicines and related doses. Importantly we will also identify appropriate sources for guidance and support.
  • Need for confidentiality and the rules for disclosure of information relating to an individual's medication.

3. Types of Medicine

Medicines are taken for many different reasons such as to:

  • Treat a condition - e.g. an antibiotic, to treat an infection.
  • Control a condition - e.g. a medicine to lower blood pressure.
  • Treat the symptoms of a condition - e.g. a painkiller for toothache.
  • Prevent illness occurring - e.g. a vaccination against disease.

When it comes to administering medicines, the more knowledgeable the practitioner the safer (s)he will be. To help you gain the knowledge you will require to support your practice, this section will examine:

  • The range and type of medicines that you will administer and their purpose and legal classification.
  • The routes by which medicines are administered.
  • The signs and symptoms of side effects and adverse reactions to medicines.
  • The importance of checking for and understanding, the contra indications of and interactions between, various medicines.

4. Medicine Administration
In this section of the programme we will explore three key areas, namely the:

1. Importance of seeking consent and ensuring appropriate risk assessment prior to the administration of medicines; whether the medicines are administered by the service user themselves or a designated member of the care team.

2. Administration and control of the medicines, with specific focus on:

  • Preparation
  • Administration
  • Recording (including medicines administered or refused and administration errors).
